"Poor, uneducated people are superstitious"

It is because they are so vulnerable and powerless. It is the reason people can be persuaded to place all their hope in an "afterlife"...and strap a bomb around their abdomen that will (hopefully) murder scores of infidels. God will sort out any mistakes in the "afterlife".

People with 2/3 rds of 5/8 ths of nothing will follow any path that offers hope. Religion flourishes amongst people who have little control over their environment or destiny. Not being able to create worldly meaning they are easy pickings for any religious proselytizer. Sheep do not control where they feed or what they do. They must trust in whatever shephard is stuffing grass or the promise of grass in their mouth.
