I did opt to have a moyel (though I am not jewish) instead of by my wife's ob-gyn (after all, an ob-gyn has a completely different specialty). The moyel gave my son a piece of cloth soaked in sugar water to suck on while I held my son. And when my son's eyes rolled back in his head from the sugar high, the moyel proceeded with the ummm, operation. My son didn't wince, didn't cry, though, I have to say, he did seem to come down off of his sugar high a little bit. I watched the procedure up close and it was very quick and I honestly don't see how the major botched jobs can happen. Oh yeah, this all happened in our kitchen dining area. My son had his nice cozy home to enjoy the procedure in (ok, so maybe "enjoy" isn't the right word....LOL) I did a great deal of research before making the decision. And here are some of the things that I found out. 1. Of course the baby is restrained! Can you imagine performing surgery on someone who is thrashing about? Has anyone ever seen a baby that doesn't thrash about almost constantly? 2. Sugar water is a very good distraction for a baby 3. After consulting with a couple of physician friends and my wife's ob-gyn, they all agreed that the administration of a local anesthesia would be just as traumatic as the procedure itself...and clearly a general anesthesia on an infant is much more risky than the circumcision itself. 4. I am much more pissed off at my parents for denying me that desert at Bob's Big Boy when I was 6yo than I am about making the decision to slice and dice my unit (sorry for the graphic admission). 5. if you are going to have a moyel do the procedure and you are not jewish, you do need to have a jew in your family and he or she has to be present. 6. the videos that you will find that are used to help you make the decision about circumcision are done by anti-circumcision people and are done in such a way to make the procedure look barbaric. They are not done objectively. Is this TMI???? LOL
