elmat,

The Chronicle correspondent seems a little unclear on the concept. He cites the fact that women in Iran wear Adidas shoes as proof of America's influence. Huh? Adidas is a German corporation:

"The young women, wearing scarves that barely adhere to strict Islamic dress codes that require they cover their heads, window-shop in Adidas running shoes. "

I toured mexico last march, many years ago I went there as a young man and the small villages with donkeys and mud huts and fresh foods with ever curious but very poor young women were so - uh "exhilirating" - especially those young women - hehe.

But last year these same small towns still had the donkey's and mud huts, but the young women had adidas and nike and fubu and pagers and cellphones and I'M a PRINCESS or BAD GIRL t-shirts and their unbridled curiosity of a western traveller seems to have been replaced by utter contempt of a mere man thinking he is deserving of the time, presence and attention of PRINCESS - BWAHAHAHA! And you wonder why some of these muslim guys want to blow our heads off for polluting - uhhh I mean liberating thier women's heads?

The problem I saw in mexico was that although the standard and technology had went up for the young women, the poor young boys standard of living had not increased nearly as much. At one of the local catholic churches, they would take in poor young girls living on the streets of guadalajara but the poor young boys were not given the same treatment :(
