Otherwise you would have said what you just did in this post. "A gun is a mechanism for killing. So is a nuclear bomb." So what? "They are similar in that they allow mass killing" I thought I had seen some fairly large stretches, but this one is the tops. Over the top. Makes you look foolish, not smart btw. "and have no purpose other than killing and maiming," Now you sound like fresc. Surely you are too smart to pass along such a dishonest and incorrect assertion. They deter (or help people to deter I should say), my friend. In fact I would say they do that way, way, way, way more than the two things you sight as their ONLY purpose. I KNOW you are too smart to believe your statement is true. I think it just sounds good to you and supports your fear of guns. "Should the grandfather have been more careful?" Yes, obviously. He was killed with his own gun. "Could he have prevented this tragedy?" Of course he could have. All he would have to have done is follow NRA guidelines for storing his weapons. You know, the organization that many on your side hate. The ones who teach safety. "What about kids whose parents are law enforcement officers? Are they careful enough? A very safe group in general. I say yes. Think how many cops there are and how scarce this type of event is (or even accidents are quite rare). Feel free to refute this if you have any statistics indicating abnormally high gun crimes or accidents among law enforcement families. I bet it is lower than the average population.
