According to you almost 1 in 10 are unemployed with millions
more forced to take lower paying jobs.

(For Feb 2005, the BLS shows unemployment rate is 9.3%)

U-6 Total unemployed, plus all marginally attached workers,
plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a
percent of the civilian labor force plus all marginally
attached workers......................................... 9.3

NOTE: Marginally attached workers are persons who currently are neither working nor looking for work but indicate that they want and are available for a job and have looked for work sometime in the recent past. Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached, have given a job-market related reason for not currently looking for a job. Persons employed part time for economic reasons are those who want and are available for full-time work but have had to settle for a part-time schedule.

I didn't know we were deeply mired in a recession that
apparently is teetering awfully close to a depression.

That is mainly because of the housing bubble which has led to people using their homes as ATMs.

All these are pathetic moves on the part of Greenspan and the Dumbya administration to postpone the inevitable. And by doing so, they make the situation worse and worse. Those who can't see beyond the veneer think everything is peachy, while the rot keeps growing within.
