I don't think that most Republicans consciously think of these as motivations. Instead, they seem to believe that anyone can overcome any circumstance with enough hard work and faith in God. But most of these "pull yourself up by your boot straps" people had advantages all their lives: good schools, safe neighborhoods, healthy family environment, preventative health care, college-as-a-goal culture, etc. They delude themselves into thinking that everyone has these same advantages, and refuse to recognize the advantages that they had. Then, they point to the one-in-a-hundred from a disadvantaged background and proclaim: "See! It is possible. All the rest are lazy welfare-grabbing, jealous government teat suckers".

So, they see no need for social programs, or at least government sponsored ones. Maybe they want all government social programs replaced with religious ones. That way, those in need will have to do the old Salvation Army trade: listen to a sermon for a bowl of soup.

Yup, back to the good ole '30s, when unemployment was 35%...
