New Left first started down this road in the 60s. In the John Wayne era the US could do no wrong. Since Vietnam, it has been the position of the new left that the US can do nothing right. New Left was looking for a form of socialism to succeed but the soviet example was obviously flawed and so the ire of these folks was turned against capitalist, internationalist america. Thus the hostility to free trade as well as to any intervention. Combine that with a romanicism of the obvious third world despots when the "stand up" to the US like saddam and perhaps now iran (NK probably wont pass their smell test.) along with creeping pacifism and you get the witches brew.
I remember clearly when this all started because i was marching against the war in vietnam back then and it was clear to me that many of the folks i was marching with were dirtbags. Same with iraq. There were many principled opponents who i hope will pick up on the stink that is the new left. Mike

more importantly a deep seated
anti-semitism i.e. Isreal is the cause of all the problems in the ME.

That explains many of the Euro leftists, for whom demonization of Israel as an immoral "white" colonial project oppressing the poor "brown" Arabs kills several birds with one stone - not only does it relieve all post-colonial AND post-Holocaust guilt, it justifies anti-Americanism AND anti-Semitism as well. So I understand why it sells well in Europe, but I don't quite understand its appeal in America, which doesn't have the same drivers, except anti-Americanism for the Chomskyite Left.
