English teachers, unfortunately, do a lot to kill poetry (imo) as do literature anthologies. Some teachers fail to present poetry (and literature in general ) as a buffet, and present it instead as a diet of "healthy" classics. That's just the wrong approach. IMO the way to reach the most students is to say - TRY it, take a bite, don't be afraid to spit it out. You don't HAVE to like Shakespeare, but take a little bite of him now and then, you may be surprised that your tastes change. But munch your way through the library- read a page, if you don't like it, don't read the book.
