Unfortunately, the author is wrong about one key element of his argument. In 1999, Florida law was changed so that administration of food and water in an assisted fashion is considered a "life-prolonging procedure," which can lawfully be withdrawn.

>>(10) "Life-prolonging procedure" means any medical procedure, treatment, or intervention, including artificially provided sustenance and hydration, which sustains, restores, or supplants a spontaneous vital function. The term does not include the administration of medication or performance of medical procedure, when such medication or procedure is deemed necessary to provide comfort care or to alleviate pain.<<

I've totally changed my mind about retiring to Florida. Looks like they have too many old people there, and feel the need to get rid of them.

I still don't see how this is NOT assisted suicide, though.
