Instead of Terri Schiavo let's imagine it is Robert F. Pulanski (his friends call him "Bob") that needs saving.

Instead of a fair maiden in need of rescuing by our brave knights ("Ride, Sir Rescuer, ride like the wind!") we have a middle aged guy with a five o'clock shadow who drools on himself. How many people would be marching around with "Save Bob!" placards?

None, of course. Nobody would even know he exists. Middle aged guys who drool on themselves make for lousy video footage.

Yes, I realize it is pointless to reason with Terri Schiavo's supporters. But I don't think everyone realizes that video clip is five years old and was severely edited to evoke a specific emotional response, or that people besides Michael Schiavo testified about Terri's not wanting to live with tubes comments, or that the Schindlers testified that Michael was a wonderful son-in-law, or that this has been endlessly adjudicated, or that what caused the falling out in the family was the Schindlers wanting a cut of the settlement Michael got, and that this is when they started calling him a murderer, etc. Or that Terri had a court-appointed guardian who was an attorney who came to the conclusion that it was in her best interests that her life not be prolonged. I think someone should continue to point those things out, because the other side is waging an extremely emotional campaign that leaves so much out.

I think it is also worth pointing out that families make decisions like this every day, and usually decide to pull feeding tubes. And that she is essentially brain dead and cannot recover. And that, as I remarked yesterday, our priorities are twisted when about 40,000 innocent poor children die every day of easily preventible illnesses. If the right-to-life movement tried to save lives that are worth saving instead of fixating on cases like Terri Schiavo's, I think everyone would commend them.
