Teh definition has to cover a large area. You don't get once precise exact definition because you don't have one exact way of thinking among all libertarians. Maybe that makes it mushy, but its less mushy than "liberal", or "conservative". You want one precice answer from libertarians but there are many issues where you will not get any such precission from liberals or conservatives.

Can you show me a Libertarian website that agues some support for public education

Being willing to accept it is a far cry from agressivly supporting it. I'm sure that there are plenty of ideas that you tolerate that you would never bother to make a big argument for.

for for subsidizing educational costs for poor children, perhaps?

I've seen a lot of libertarians argue for such a subsidy, in place of the current public school system. I've also seen arguments for charter schools and vouchers, ideas that inherently include a government role. Mostly such thoughts where articles in magazines, or entries on a blog, or posts on SI, not in something that I would have a link to.

But then Reason magazine (probably the highest circulation libertarian magazine) keeps all of its articles online. So I'll post a number of links from it calling for vouchers or supporting charter schools, or school choice, or calling for reform in public education, not calling for its elimination.
