What's their rationale for making an issue out of that distinction?

A bent towards a literal reading of Genesis through Revelation, with with a tad more time spent in both Genesis and Revelation, and perhaps a tad less time spent in the Gospels.

Unfortunately the world view of the Chaldeans was that of a flat world, not a round one, so some 2500 years later various groups make mountains out of molehills were wisdom would dictate a different course.
