Don't know if this is unique to hospitals, but this week our organization is requiring all employees to bring in two forms if ID (eg. Social security card - unlaminated, and a raised seal birth certificate ) and fill out a form. HR claims it's a federal requirement.

If it weren't so easy for illegals and employers to skirt worker ID verification,

An amusement park in PA pays its summer help in ride tickets, and pays the labor fine. Cheaper.
