Rice Likely to Back Iraq Pullout
By Robert Novak

It has begun. We are in the process of withdrawing approx 10% of our troops from Iraq right now.

I believe the combat loss of 8 American soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq a few days ago rattled some people. They know it could happen everyday.

With a current manpower shortage of near 40,000 men, and decreasing enlistments, our Army is in some worsening trouble. Prolonging the Iraq deployment is not going to help.

Timing is the issue imo. Would we do a quid pro quo with Syria for pulling out of Lebanon? Would we let Israel handle Iran if we are unable to convince the Russians to not deliver nuclear fuel to Iran?

Novak says we may leave even if the security situation is not perfect in Iraq. Hell that should not hinder us, security ain't perfect in America either.
