Most roadside checkpoints get zero "action/insurgency". Cops are fine for this role. It should be done by Iraqis today, and not coalition forces. You don't need to be "battle hardened" to force an approaching vehicle to slow down and show its papers. Get real.

Clearly you haven't read about Iraqi cops getting overrun by insurgents at checkpoints and at their own police stations. The Iraqi cops cut and run, or sometimes just hand over their weapons. Battle hardened troops or cops don't run when their is gunfire, rather, they head towards the gunfire. I bet you didn't know that.

What do you mean battle hardened? Most of the American 'grunts' are the same age as the Iraqis.......18, 19, 20. They have as much experience fighting as the Iraqis do.

I think the problem goes much deeper than that. I don't think the Iraqis fully understand what they are fighting for. Freedom and democracy are still very much abstract concepts to them. They have no commitment to the enterprise. That's what I think we are seeing.

And they probably don't trust us all that much either.........between the torture stories and the abuse they have experienced as private citizens on the streets at the hands of Americans.......I am sure they have very ambivalent feelings when it comes to Americans.

As I have said before, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. We have led the Iraqi horse to the the democracy water hole but they are drinking only occasionally.
Its a problem that can not be ignored.
