This case is different from most "pull the plug" cases because the person is not going to die a natural death anytime soon. Most "pull the plug" cases involve people who are at death's door, and everybody's making judgment calls.

I am not saying that I can predict, with any certainty, that a court would have found that Michael Schiavo had a conflict of interest, but there doesn't appear to have been any way to even get into that.

Thus, Michael was able to pay almost $400,000 of Terri's own money to his lawyer, Felos, while Terri's parents made do with an inexperienced lawyer acting pro bono.

Admittedly, it must be very rare for spouses who are all-but-married to someone else not to go ahead and get a divorce and let the family deal with the incapacitated person.
