you say that J6P doesn't want to spend a lot of money. but then you suggest getting a Tivo and DVD burner. Tivo sells such a combo device on its site for $399. add in the $300 for the lifetime subscription and that is nearly $700. do you really think J6P spends this kind of money on a DVR? i think (and the cable cos agree with me) that J6P spends zero on a DVR w/built-in receiver from his cableco, with the monthly fee being the only expense.

as for iPod, i agree it is very cool. i have two of them and i think iTunes is way better than WMP. so what. i won't buy an Apple and neither will 98% of PC users around the world, because it costs so much more than a Dell. i just bought a new Dell PC (with MCE2005) with a 24" LCD monitor for the same price as Apple's 23" LCD by itself. why would somebody pay $1800 for an Apple monitor, and then maybe another $1800 for a Mac, when they could pay half that amount and get a better monitor with a Dell PC? that is why Apple has such a small share of the market.

for the same reason, i don't think most people are going to plunk down $699 for the Tivo/DVD solution. (by the same token, most aren't going to spend $1800 for a special "extra-quiet" Alienware MCE system which they can use to run their $23,000 80" plasma TV. that kind of "high end" system is not what i'm talking about when i muse about MCE being a Tivo-killer.)
