One Answer to "Who is Mark Hurd?"

He wrote with Lars Nyberg “The Value Factor: How Global Leaders Use Information for Growth and Competitive Advantage”

"We operate in a fast-changing global business environment..."

From the San Jose Mercury News:

“In a book he co-wrote last year, Hurd comes across as smart, numbers-driven and unsentimental -- just like Fiorina, who was fired last month by HP's board of directors.

Unlike Fiorina, he seems ill-disposed toward self-promotion -- he's never been on the cover of a major business publication, and he's practically an unknown name in Silicon Valley.”

``Corporate leadership is not a democracy,'

and he could have trouble with “the HP Way:”

``The core vision of the company comes from the top,' they say. ``The rest of the company can then be empowered to realize the vision.'

It sounds like they found another take charge type of guy over insiders who might still have too much consensus management style. Since he is from a small(er) company, I bet part of the deal was to give great control to others in the organization they want to keep which Carly didn't want to share.
