And China involvement in the world is a good thing. Perhaps the US and particularly the Europeans should take a page from what the chinese do in both Ethiopia and the rest of Africa.
What China does for national interest reasons there can have good humanitarian implications as well.
IMO, China is an authoritarian state with a capitalist system with a great deal of economic freedom and a little bit of the political variety. There is an element of hyper nationalism existing there, particularly among the young who are quite proud of their accomplishments. Nothing wrong with that unless it leads to a disregard of the right of others particularly in the region. So although Taiwan is part of china, recent legislation is worrisome. And China's nature on the borders always has a bit of an expansionary theme. So you need solid alliances with stable countries there along with the worlds greatest naval and air power doing a bit of backup. Deter china from making mistakes that deep down they dont want to make. The world needs to be beyond the type of nationalism the Japanese gave the region in the 20s and 30s. Over time a bit more democracy and a more peaceful less nationalistic china will emerge, i hope. mike
