How about three democratic states for the country formerly known as Iraq. Without something like Hashemite glue to restore colonialist created iraq, we may have to look toward a three state solution. There are alot of good things happening on the ground in iraq right now. Terrorists are losing but unfortunately the creation of state with legs is lagging as the big 3 fight things out. Some say that democracy is untidy and that is what we are seeing but i suspect the fissures in iraq resemble the former yugoslavia more that we would like to admit. So bring on the Hashemites or the Vegemites for that matter if they, like Mighty Mouse, can save the day. If not we need to start thinking about serbia, croatia and bosnia solutions as next best sans civil war of course. Mike
PS Whatever side each of us took regarding the war itself, it now becomes incumbant on all of us to look for whats best in terms of vital US national interests as well as something that can work out well long term for most iraqis. We can still disagree on the origins of the situation etc. but it is our responsiblity on a thread such as this to think forward.

Oh dear. The "Hashemite Restoration" option hasn't been touted in a good long time. I don't think it's a very good fit with the currently trendy democracy domino theory resurgence, but who knows, its time may come again too.

And who are you to decide whether or not the Sunnis opt for Hashemite representation? Isn't that for THEM to decide?

And since Sharif Ali is someone that many Iraqis seem to have great comfort with, including Shi'ites and Kurds, he may prove to be a bridge to a national compromise.

And there's no problem with a constitutional monarchy, which I'm sure Sharif Ali and his sunnis may attempt to advocate in the forthcoming constitutional negotiations.

After all, isn't England a constitutional monarchy?
