Hi Dave,
You are correct...except I'd say they beat on the iron pot with a sledgehammer at the rate of about 10 blows per second. Ear protection is a must. I prefer the ear plugs to the big ear muff thing.

The tube is quite skinny. Even the "new" skinny one that I experienced last week. The difference was that my entire body was not inside as in past machines. Just the upper half of my torso. Still I have heard that some folks become terrified in that thing. One other difference. The old machine had a mirror that you could use to see a little bit of the room outside the tube. The new one did not have that.

The new open MRIs are fine and a completely different experience. I had a kidney done in one of those. Nothing to it, but it can't get the high quality images of the brain that the skinny tube can.
