One thing we can do is to see how different industries are represented on the lists. If a particular industry is very well represented, it suggests that it may be something industry-specific, rather than company-specific, to wit, the price of oil. 28 of the top 50 on the NH list today are energy related. moneycentral.msn.com Not too surprising on a day where crude is spiking over $58 a bbl to new all-time highs (in nominal $ terms). In contrast only 4 are health related. What's more interesting is to look at the top performing companies that aren't in the energy sector. CVH PPDI PSYS GHCI are in the healthcare sector. That's about 8% of the list, compared to energy's 56%. The list also indicates that these companies are also in the lower half of the list in terms of market cap ranging from midcap Coventry at $7.5B to microcap GHCI at only $732MM. First thing I like to do is to plug these names into a Yahoo Finance watchlist to look at their profiles and begin to get to know them: Coventry Health Care Inc. (Coventry) is a managed healthcare company with 2.5 million members as of December 31, 2004. It operates a portfolio of local market health plans serving 15 markets, primarily in the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest and Southeast United States. Its health plans are operated under the names Altius Health Plans, Carelink Health Plans, Coventry Health Care, Coventry Health and Life, Group Health Plan, HealthAmerica, HealthAssurance, HealthCare USA, OmniCare, PersonalCare, SouthCare, Southern Health and WellPath. In selected markets, it participates in Medicaid and Medicare Advantage programs. The Company's products include traditional health maintenance organization (HMO) products, preferred provider organizations (PPOs) and point of service (POS) products. Within these products, it also offers consumer-directed benefit options, including health reimbursement accounts (HRAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs). In January 2005, the Company acquired First Health Group Corp. Pharmaceutical Product Development, Inc. is a provider of drug discovery and development services and products to pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies . The Company offers broad therapeutic expertise, advanced technologies and extensive resources for drug discovery and drug and device development. Development services include preclinical programs and Phase I to Phase IV clinical development services. The Company's discovery sciences services include preclinical evaluations of anticancer therapies and compound partnering arrangements associated with the development and commercialization of potential drug products. The Company assists its clients' research and evaluates the development and commercial potential for compounds at various stages of development. In February 2005, it completed the acquisition of a biomarker business. Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. provides in-patient behavioral health care services in the United States. Through its in-patient division, the Company operates 34 owned or leased in-patient behavioral health care facilities with approximately 4,000 beds. Through its in-patient management contract division, Psychiatric Solutions manages 43 in-patient behavioral health care units for third parties and 11 in-patient behavioral health care facilities for government agencies. The Company primarily operates in underserved markets with limited competition and favorable demographic trends. Its local and regional marketing is led by clinical and business development representatives at each of the in-patient facilities. Both families and agencies seeking placement for children receive confidential service through Psychiatric Solutions' call center. Genesis HealthCare Corporation is a provider of healthcare and support services to the elderly in the United States. The Company was formed by the December 2003 spin-off of its eldercare and rehabilitation businesses from Genesis Health Ventures, Inc. Within the Company's network of facilities, it offers services focusing on the medical, physical and behavioral issues facing the elderly population. Its business consists of two primary businesses: inpatient services and rehabilitation therapy services. These segments are supported by complementary service capabilities. So we have four companies in four distinct sectors within the health care universe that are performing very well: a smallish HMO (Coventry), a CRO (PPDI), a psych facilities owner/operator (PSYS) and an eldercare provider (GHCI). Next, I like to look at their stats in Yahoo. More on this in a bit... Sam
