re: No doubt... that was a huge deal for TiVo in terms of subscriber adds. Do you think it will be good for TiVo in the long run?

Yes, I do. I think Ramsey was infatuated with being a packaged goods to end user product company. I think TiVo is better off being a branded software company, which sounds like what the Comcast deal is about. Right now they have the most elegant solution, can they maintain that lead? I would prefer to see them be hardware agnostic, even go to the PC space in competition with MS.

As far as the patents, I skimmed through them a while back and assuming they hold, it would preclude many of the features that people think of as DVR standard (there were a lot of patents I didn't understand). And I think they could enjoin or license MS (MCE) as well as cable operators. Of course you are right that "time warp" is critical. If TiVo were to win the Echostar suit, "To the moon, Alice". On the other hand, if they were to lose it...

It's sure to be interesting and unpredictable.

John

I been with Comcast (and prior names) since inception some 25 years ago in Chicagoland. Comcast's biggest sub base is Chicagoland. Everybody I know has Comcast. Everyone thinks Comcast charges too much for standard cable ($50) and the price seems to rise by pennies all the time. Many of us pay Comcast another $50 for broadband. No one I know will pay Comcast more money than they must, regardless of features. If we want additional features, such as TiVo, we will go to TiVo, if just not to pay Comcast more money. Maybe this is why their digital svc represents 1/3 of the sub base. And maybe this is why they hooked-up with TiVo.

Recently, I had a bunch of friends over (all Comcast subs), showed-off my Humax DVD w/TiVo. I asked them would they get TiVo as a stand alone or through Comcast. They replied, "Depends on the cost."

P.S. You don't need digital cable to use TiVo as many journalists state.

Perhaps this is a nit, but Ramsey got fired just like Bill Gates did - by becoming Chairman.

To be even more precise, Ramsey still is CEO - until they get a replacement.

To say he was "fired" is entirely speculative, and my guess is that it's inaccurate. But it makes for a good news story and snazzy posting.
