The problems with proportionality most often occur once you take it out of the classroom and to the front-lines of the battlefield. It nearly always requires split second judgements based on incomplete information.

I don't disagree.

We are asking 19 year olds, who are risking their very young lives, to make these awful decisions. Who is going to fault these young soldiers? Not me. I think I understand your views on this.

Thankfully, however, the young soldiers doing the fighting are under a chain of command filled with highly educated officers who are imbued with the traditions, honor, integrity, and the spirit of our founding way of life.

These values can not be turned on and off. They are an integral part of our military establishment.

The military establishment will not turn on the young fighting men and women for making honest mistakes, but they will try to weed out the unfit before they can disgrace the uniform.

IMO they have been doing a great job - nontheless, a few misfits will get through.

For us, to defend these few misfits, dishonors all the rest.
