LOUIS -- As a teen-ager growing up in the city six decades ago, Doris Baker Field looked forward to Election Day. That’s when her friendly neighborhood Democratic committeeman would come knocking on the door of her parents’ house near the corner of Eighth Street and St. Clair Avenue. With him came an offer Field couldn’t refuse. “I loved elections coming up because I made big money,” said Field, 79, who now lives in O’Fallon. “I got money by just going to the polls to vote. I got $5. And I got an extra $5 for taking pamphlets around the neighborhood.” 03.24.05 Voter Fraud Probed In State - Double Dippers, Felons Targeted Denver Post Hundreds of Coloradans are being investigated for voter fraud in the November election. Prosecutors in at least 47 counties are probing cases involving accusations of forged signatures, felons voting or people who attempted to vote twice. At least 122 voters gave new meaning to the adage "vote early and vote often" by apparently casting absentee ballots through the mail, then showing up in person to vote on Election Day. And, officials say, at least 120 felons statewide cast ballots and now face possible prosecution. 03.23.05 5 Indicted In Alleged East St. Louis Vote-Buying Scheme Associated Press Five more East St. Louis Democrats have been charged in a scheme to pay voters $5 to $10 each to cast Democratic ballots in the November 2004 election, according to a federal indictment unsealed Wednesday. Federal prosecutors in southern Illinois charged four Democratic committeemen and one precinct worker with conspiracy to commit election fraud. On Tuesday, three other committeemen and a precinct worker pleaded guilty to related vote-buying charges. 03.21.05 ACVR Refers Voter Fraud Investigation To Dept. of Justice, Congressional Oversight Panel Report Shows Third Party Effort to Circumvent Law and Register Illegal Voters COLUMBUS, OHIO – Today the American Center for Voting Rights (ACVR) referred a compendium of preliminary findings of registration fraud, intimidation, vote fraud and litigation to the U.S. Department of Justice. The report was previously made available to the House Administration Committee who will hold a field hearing on election fraud in Columbus today. 03.21.05 Committee to Continue Oversight on Election Reform with a Field Hearing in Ohio on Monday WASHINGTON D.C. - The Committee on House Administration, led by Chairman Bob Ney (OH-18), will travel to Columbus, Ohio, this Monday, March 21st, to convene a field hearing on the 2004 election and the implementation of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA). This will be the second in a series of oversight hearings that the Committee is holding on this issue. The hearing will convene at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 21st, in the Senate Finance Committee hearing room within the Ohio State Capitol Building, located on the corner of 3rd and State Street in Columbus, Ohio. Committee On House Administration 03.18.05 Election Reform Proposals Ignite Clash Over States Rights The Associated Press “As Congress considers possible election reforms in light of another close presidential race, a fight is shaping up between lawmakers who want national standards and state officials, who maintain that running elections is a state right. This underlying ideological conflict – federal power vs. states rights – is a tension that has been a part of American politics since the beginning of the union. But how it plays out on this issue is critical to what future election changes end up being put in place.” 03.18.05 North-Of-The-Border Voting Los Angeles Times “Will millions of Mexican nationals living in the United States be entitled to go to thousands of polling places north of the Rio Grande to vote in next year’s Mexican presidential election? That’s the question before Mexico’s Senate after years of delay that disenfranchised millions, and it is still unlikely that the daunting logistical challenges can be addressed before the 2006 election. Mexican citizens, like Americans and citizens of many other countries, have a constitutional right to vote in elections even when absent from their homeland, but they have not been able to exercise this right.” 03.18.05 Electionline.org Releases New Briefing on Provisional Voting “Whether a provisional ballot was counted in last year’s election depended nearly as much on where you lived as your status as a voter. A new report by the nonpartisan and non-advocacy electionline.org found that differing practices around the country in issuing and counting provisional ballots led to wide variations in the numbers fail-safe of ballots distributed and counted.” 03.15.05 Letter To The Editor From Diebold President The New York Times “A recent Caltech-M.I.T. study clearly shows that touch-screens are the most accurate and efficient method of voting. The study recognizes Georgia, which uses touch-screens across the state, as making the greatest improvement in voting accuracy throughout the country.” 03.15.05 The Election Chaos Act Of 2005 National Review “Senator Clinton’s speech came as she introduced – along with fellow Democratic senators John Kerry and Barbara Boxer – legislation called the ‘Count Every Vote Act of 2005.’ The bill might best be characterized as the ultimate wish-list of Democrats who believe that rumored voting irregularities in Ohio cost the party the White House in 2004. Although its stated purpose is to ‘count every vote,’ its actual effect would be to make it impossible for polling-place officials to determine which votes should be counted and which should not.” ac4vr.com
