He used questionable or even outright faulty details to back his central thesis. That doesn't make his thesis wrong but it certainly does hurt his argument, and results in his conclusion being a reach becuase it is stated in stronger terms than then what the evidence can support.

Replacing current cars with hybrids can save gas. Including the other technologies that normally are put in to hybrids also saves gas. How much improvement comes from each is uncertain but comparing the average current car to a Prius doesn't accurately reflect the savings you get from hybrid technology. Hybrid technology itself might save more like 10-25%, not 50% of gas use. Of course even the low end of 10% amounts to a lot of gasoline, and as hybrids become more advanced and available they will start to make an impact, but the change will not happen quickly and even when it is done it will not be a panacea.
