Well
you have to remember they tried very hard to shut their critics up

the Alien and Sedition acts were terrible
and there were many abuses of freedom to speak- but they were more robust and physical then. Now that we have a standing army, and huge police forces, the use of force does not stand out as much- since we are already used to being regimented by the state.
