Dense forests can be really claustrophobic. Humans evolved on the African savannah, so on average we probably feel best in a mixture of trees and open space.

Sled dogs born and raised on the tundra around Nome have a real shock when they come here for the Iditarod race. The poor critters spend three days looking up at the trees, wondering what the heck they are!
