Laz,

This is a nation where the majority of the population are Christians (I mean the kind that actually believes in Jesus Christ). This means that most believe that miracles can, and do still happen. In other western countries, I'm sure that Mrs. Schiavo would have been dead long ago. In some western countries, (I suppose to keep health costs down) dialysis was (and may still be) rationed, denying treatment for many senior citizens, as their doctors deemed that the patient's quality of life was too poor to warrant dialysis.

I don't think Bush is going to be damaged by this at all. Everyone knows the President's beliefs, and while many don't think he should have gotten involved in this matter (me included), and many believe that the courts have already well established (and well thought out) procedures regarding the removal of treatments like feeding tubes (me included), it doesn't surprise me he signed the bill. Bush did what he could, and did not take extra legal steps to keep her alive - after Federal Courts made their decision. Democracy in action.
