Hate to say this, but what's a Talmud?

Why do I think I am opening a can of worms here.....?

Its kind of like a Jewish Sharia.

Is it written down somewhere, or just an agreed upon set of traditions.

No, its written down. Its an important aspect of life for the devout Jew.

One of the things with Sharia is that its implementation differs from Muslim country to Muslim country.

You know I am not sure about that one. I suspect the degree of implementation and interpretation depends more on how religious a person is........orthodox, conservative or reformed......rather than the country in which they are located. However, that may be wrong.

One of my friends was conservative [not in a political sense] living in San Diego and he would not do anything on the sabbath, including touching money. Other Jewish friends who were reformed [again as in religion] had no problem touching money and doing business transactions on a Saturday. I would expect the prohibition about touching money would be an example of something in the Talmud.

It's bigger than an encyclopedia, and its interpretation and implementation differs from Jewish sect to Jewish sect, and even from Jew to Jew. Probably half of all Jews couldn't even tell you what it is.
