Indian state shuts down dance bars, but Bombay escapes crackdown for now

"The government has come to the conclusion that all the dance bars outside of Bombay should be closed with immediate effect," Maharashtra's home minister R.R. Patil told the state legislative assembly.

In a sharp reaction to Patil's statement, Manjit Singh Rekhi, president of the bar owners association, gave the home minister 24 hours to revoke his decision.

"Otherwise we will bring the entire liquor industry to a virtual halt and also carry out a protest march of all the women working in these bars to Patil's house," Rekhi told a news conference,
