Yes they are mined- big tonnage moved every day to make them profitable. I like that one picture with 5 or 6 trucks full of sand driving out of the sunset. You would think they cost a dime a dozen. If you want to read more about the oilsands:

Wayne, for perspective, if you define a large mining truck as +200 tons, then 1/3 of all large trucks are in the Canadian province of Alberta, 1/3 in the rest of North america, and 1/3 in the rest of the world.
