You have to realize that the strip of Moldova which is allied with the Ukraine (whereas most of Moldova has closer ties with Romania) is named after the Dniestr River.

Attempts to come up with a name in English for the Trans-Dniester region results in a number of comical names. Since the region does not have a government, as they are part of Moldova, there is no official source to consult for a correct name.

The Moldovan government spells the name of the region as "Moldova".

When Catherine the Great won Moldova from the Turks, she called it Bessarabia. The Soviets changed the name.

First time I ever used the CIA Factbook website was to look up a holiday in Hong Kong. They had the day wrong.
