If the seals are eating too many fish, maybe some of those same people doing the "culling" or killing, will decide that people are eating too many fish, and wack them too. Seals wipe out local fishing on the west coast. Fishermen hate them, and wish they could kill them. It's all about competing for food sources.

Karen, I used to live in Nova Scotia and have been to Newfoundland a few times. The seal hunt existed for several hundred years before Bridgit Bardot decided they were too cute to kill. Major movie star + baby seal = picture that animal rights activists could really use. Unfortunately - the combination of foreign fishing fleets and predation by seals killed the cod industry and destroyed much of rural life in communities around the Gulf of St Lawrence. The fishery is now protected and the foreign fleets are controlled, but the seal population exploded and is a real problem. The only reason seals are protected is that they are 'cute'. No one tries to save the cod or the cows :-) Or since we are mostly discussing fur instead of meat - the mink. John
