OK, hitech is not my focus right now, however I really like HP's new CEO - Mark Hurd - what a contrast to his predecessor. This is a down-to Earth guy - who discovered that he got PRIORITIES to address.. What a contrast to Carly Fiona, whose only "strategy" seemingly was to merge with near-collapsing Compaq.

I really hate it when the leaders became VALUE DESTROYERS instead of value creators. And the best tool to do this are mostly ill-advised "mergers". Compaq back then was a self-deflating, near distressed outfit. The thing you wait to get into Chapter 11 and then acquire on the cheap for assets.

Wrong ! Carly Fiona copying the ill-advised "Telecom Dinosaur" strategy preferred to buy low margin "market share" for hard earned HP shareholder value. I remember the boardroom fight between Bill Packard and Fiona. Bill correctly urged investors to LEVERAGE THE UNIQUE CAPABILITIES of HP especially in peripherals like Printers.

All other credentials of "Boxmakers" are also-ran, can be readily acquired on the open market. Also it turned out that "social engineering" ("inclusivity" HR programs, "civil service style") seemed to have been more important by HP than performance or even strategy. Ouch !

YEt Fiona prevailed. The consequences are now paid by HPQ investors. The new CEO cannot even think about strategy, he has to adress even more urgent priorities first. I don't envy him but wish him well nonetheless. I like his down-to earth style. It should remind all megalo-mergermania empire building "CEOs" like Fiona that value is created by the folks in the field, SOLVING PROBLEMS EVERY DAY for customers they hope to continue to be able to serve and certainly not by CEOs on steroids on the "merger mill".
