"Extremism in the defence of liberty is no vice. Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."

Barry, we should have listened.

"Garbage in, garbage out" isn't what I'd call justice.

Maybe not, but is that the fault of the particular judge who shuffled a piece of limp lettuce from his inbox to his outbox in accordance with the rules for waste management?

I've been a lawyer for almost 20 years, and during that time I've gotten used to a lot of things.

I was thinking of you earlier today and about how you've probably seen the seedy side of marriage a lot and maybe that's why you're so intent, as are many others here, on the notion that an "ex" has an inherent conflict of interest in guardianship. I was thinking about that because I am confident I could faithfully serve that function for any ex of mine if called on. In fact, the person who has my medical power of attorney is an ex of mine. He's perfectly qualified: he knows be better than anyone, his own preferences are just like mine, and he's willing to do it. I trust him completely.

The point of which is that there's no reason Michael couldn't be operating in good faith. Everything he has done can be explained in that context if you're willing to look at it that way. That's not to say that he is, mind you. But it boggles my mind how people look at his second family and conclude automatically that he can't possibly do right by Terri.

Vice is a monster of so frightful mien,
As to be hated needs but to be seen;
Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face,
We first endure, then pity, then embrace.
