The Battle of Castine is considered to be the greatest naval defeat ever suffered by the USA.

Someone has kept it well hidden. :>) No such naval "battle" comes up on google, yahoo, or Wikipedia. They seem to have had a land skirmish.

Out of curiosity, I did a Google search for the Battle of Castine and came up with this little jewel. I have no idea about its accuracy since I've never heard of this one before.

Buck participated in the battle at Castine in 1779, the worst defeat ever for the US Navy up until Pearl Harbor, though Buck bore no blame for the fiasco. The British destroyed his property in Bucksport. After the war he rebuilt and went on with his life. He died in 1789, so well respected that the townspeople renamed the town in his honor in 1792.

Whoops, just looked ahead and I see Bill did the same but didn't come up with this one. I don't recall a U. S. Navy this early. Tell us more.

OT Didn't know that Alastair...Will have to look up that history when there is time...I know that it is a very old city in the US...Don't know if it is as old as St Augustine FL... Did you go up and down ALL the inlets on the coast of Maine??? Now, THAT would be a trip!

It would be wonderful to someday make a trip around the country...somewhat like in Steinbeck's Travels with Charlie...

The difference might be is that my idea of camping is the Four Seasons...<ggg>
