Bill,

This was War of 1812 timeframe.

I was surprised that I couldn't google anything on it.

Google is biased by its user base - which is significantly American. If you searched on a Canadian site you would find different results and views.

Canada teaches they won the War of 1812. I found this funny when I moved to Canada as a kid - because Canada as a country didn't exist until 55 years later. But when you get down to it - they have a point. The US retaliated against British aggression by attacking their interests in colonies that later became Canada. The settlers in those colonies had seen a big influx from the American Revolutionary War (the Loyalists) and the defense of the Canadian colonies helped establish Canada's national identity.

While technically a draw - the US also won big. In a strategic sense we won because the Treaty of Ghent was Britain's acceptance of an independent America.

John
