My wife's home island of Guam is usually hit by at least one supertyphoon a year. A supertyphoon would be like Ivan on steroids. On Guam every structure is built with iron reinforced concrete, foundation, walls and roof. These structures survive year after year although the windows and doors sometimes blow out. Storm shutters are made out of plate iron or steel. The island also survived an 8.X magnitude earthquake a couple years ago with minimal damage. Building for hurricanes in the US SE can be done, but they need to shed the trailer park que sera mentality.
