Horseshoes were cheaper than tyres, but cars outnumber horses, even in Europe, despite the 100% market share and cost advantage of horses 100 years ago.

There's more to whether a technology is useful and successful than cost.

"particularly across Europe"? Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nigeria, Brazil, Pakistan, India. There's where the numbers are. With the dirty cheap mobile phone the massification has been fantastic.
