why will it be in US long term interests to stop the ag subsidies ? Yes. Here's why:

Because the money that pay the subsidies is taken from productive sectors of the economy. It is tax on sector that are competive to subsidize incompetitive sector of the economy, i.e., agriculture.

Second, politicians will dirstribute the subcisides to suit their poilitcial agendas not necessarily to the benefit of the economy as a whole. For instance Bill Clinton bribing senators not to impeach him by doling out subsidies to angora goat farmers in Montana.

If agriculture producers could enter the market more likely they would be improving their economies and imrpoived economies is no fertile ground for terrorists.

Today they can't compete.

By subsidizing some crops it will only make farmers use more fertilizer and increase its prices and make them more expensive for the Sudanese.

Anyway, such situation is not going to last very long because there is less and less money to subsidize agriculture.

>>Maybe the US should cut subsidies to help our trade partners fight communism<<

You mean in China or somewhere else?

BTW, the US will NEVER significantly cut agri. subsidies, and China has followed the US and other developed countries' example and started to subsidize its agricultural sector too. Just like what they say "if you cannot beat them then join them".

And ironically, this will only enhance the social stability in China and strengthen the current leadership<g>.
