longnshort, The Schiavos' court proceedings were held in civil court, whereas OJ's and Blake's were criminal proceedings. Very different standards of proof are at work between the two venues.

There were other people to whom Terri Schiavo had made the statement that she would not want to live if it meant she would have to be hooked up to machines, feeding tubes, etc. She made this statement more than once or twice, and in the presence of people other than her husband. Her statement was prompted by something she had seen on television.

Yes, perhaps the timing seems odd. I cannot say whether the settlement would have been larger or smaller had Terri died prior to the judgment. My guess is is that it could have gone either way. Maybe some of the thread barristers would offer an opinion.

BTW, Michael Schiavo was awarded $350,000 for loss of consortium. Terri Schiavo was awarded $750,000 for her future care and therapy. Terri's portion could be spent only with permission from the court. - Holly
