Laz, the conversation on the listserv went something like this:

"Do not resuscitate" is too general a statement and too sweeping in scope.

Was the tattoo placed in jest or as a party joke?

What was that person's state of mind and/or sobriety at the time the tattoo was placed?

Medical personnel have a duty to resuscitate unless and until there is clear evidence that such would be contrary to the resuscitee's wishes, and a tattoo across the chest doesn't begin to cut it as satisfactory evidence. It was decided that any medico taking such a tattoo at face value would most definitely be open to all kinds of liability and sanctions. - Holly
