marcos, my little mazda city car is 10 years old and doing fine. My mazda gets me around, has hauled God knows how many patio stones and loads of limestone screening, firewood with the back seats out, been to the Maritimes and back twice... we looked like gypsies with 3 bikes, roof top carrier ....

Computers are a different animal. If I had to depend on my P120 for the net ... I couldn't... I guess I'd abstain.. You are depriving yourself of a lot man.. comes a time when things just aren't good enough... Just my 2 cents...

K

Investigate all options before wiring yourself borg forever. I use Linux for the web mostly. It's free and no viruses. It require a lerning kerve, but finally it is an ecgzilerating rish of luberikation and m-power-mint. You just have to keep telling yourself that.

You slowness is ALL windows 95. Windows 98 is faster and better, but bee-ware. Not all new hardware has windows 98 or even Windows 2000 drivers. (You could get it to work if you really tried and bought a pure clone and asked them to install all drivers and give you a disk.. safest but few shops will install windows 98 anymore.) If you get a NU computer is will come with windows XP Hame and Fambly. That is buggy and slo. If you must get windows XP, get windows XP Professional. Windows XP is just Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 with all sorts of multi-media crappe. But NOW they make you pay if you donna wan windows XP hame. I paid some pirates 219 dollars for a license to windows 2000 so the software would run efficiently with fewer bugs and security vulnerabilities. You will pay extra to NOT get Windows XP home. Understand why the JD's wanted to sue Bill Gates? After you fool with MS software a bit you will understand a lot more. More background. Windows XP is actually Windows NT 5.1. Windows 2000 is Windows NT 5.0 (internally to Microsoft.)

Windows 98 and Windows 2000 is 4 to 5 times faster than Windows XP. IF you run a laptop or the latest compaq or dell harware they WILL NOT support Windows 2000. They may not even support Windows 2003.

AND when you get all this new hardware and software, it is probable that Microsoft Office from the old mid mineties borg days may not even run on it. I would not guarantee that windows 95 programs especially 16 bis ones will run on windows XP. They may, but it is not my area of expertise. You will probably have to get ALL NEW versions of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel etc... And be prepared to shell out 400 to 700 dollars for all that if you want the fancy. Half the word docs you get sent cannot be seen by the old borg software. People just assume you have at least Word 97/2000 when they blithely send you their documents, and that includes any one of the ten or so word document macro viruses that routinely infect the docs. Probably your system is so old that it is immune to half the new viruses :)

One type of commercial software you are forced to buy.. and tha t is a modern up to day with all the bi-weekly updates paid for,a nd that is anti-virus software. And if you are net connected today the auto-email-worm and trojans must be auto-swept once a day or your computer system could be a force for evil in hours. Don't worry, at least ten worms a day will infect your computer even with a firewall -- without the best and latest anti-virus software intact. It is not just nice to have, it is a dire necessity. Going online without it is like taking a long walk in the Sahara without a drop of water.

No firewall? Feggadaboudid. You just cannot do it. You need zone alarm pro or some kind of semi-hardware (firewall on the router) or software defense.

I don know how beeg firefox is. I think it is an 8 meg download and expands to about 30 megs or so. You should be able to handle it. Read the docs when you download it.
