They have 20 days to do it in. There's a 9 day period of mourning. The cardinals will be shut in the Sistine Chapel until they have elected a new Pope. Each day that they haven't reached a decision, they burn something to make black smoke as to signal to the outside world that they still thinking on it. When you see white smoke come out of the vent on the top of the Chapel, it means they finally elected one.
