In Washington State there are several very good Wineries. Columbia Crest (the Gallo of the Northwest) has some excellent merlot vineyards. I went through a couple of cases of it. There are excellent pinot noir (a grape varietal) vineyards in Washington. As I have not needed to buy wine for a few years, my knowledge has declined. In a couple more, study will increase it.

You would enjoy visiting wineries. You should take advantage of your proximity.

Grapes benefit from warm days. At your latitude, vineyards facing the setting sun tend to produce better wines. Approach Washington Cabernet with some skepticism.
