I'm not sure that is accurate, Ish. My parents took really good care of their teeth--they both died with all of them immaculately in place--and never had any gum disease at all.

I do think that for most people gum disease is a harbinger of geezerhood, though. After a certain age, no matter how careful and healthy you try to be, your body starts not cooperating as well, and life aand health become more of a struggle.
