Another problem with individualism is that there will always be some who become more of an expert on some feature that affects your life, say flood risk, than you will have time for. Those people can, in the absence of regulation, always out compete you in that narrow field. Nearly every field will become one in which you must pay attention, or risk being at a disadvantage. This constant attention can take up a significant amount of time without contributing to an enhanced well being.

As a concrete example, if your social security is invested in a market device in which you have some degree of control, then you will be at a competitive disadvantage to other retirees unless you make the effort to understand and manage that portfolio. Maybe you would rather spend your retirement fishing, or maybe you can't remember the impacts of investments the way you used to. Too bad.
