So how long has your friend's wife with terminal cancer not taken food or water? It doesn't take very long to die that way--usually two weeks or a little less.

I'm sorry to hear that--I'm sure you are a great comfort to your friend.

The problem with blowing your head off is that someone--usually your wife or a child--finds what is left of you. It really is quite a selfish thing to do--a huge mess for everyone else, and they don't get to say goodbye to you. Children whose parents commit suicide are much more likely to do that themselves when they hit some snag in their lives.

Perhaps you should campaign locally for an assisted suicide law like Oregon has. Terminally ill patients can decide to die, but typically they are surrounded by their loved ones and everyone gets to go through the rituals that are so very important when a loved one's life is ending.
