Lots of GREAT things you can do with white phosphorous, so it's hard to guess what that may have been. It is actaully used in military weapons- -there are white phosphorous grenades. They make their recipients VERY unhappy. Or very dead.

There are some spoilsports who view the use of such weapons as a violation of the Geneva Conventions.

The stuff used to be usedin matches, which had some VERY bad side effects (hint, hint):
In no time, a person at one of John's demonstrations, Samuel Jones, spotted an overlooked, golden opportunity, and patented the invention under his name. Mr. Jones produced matches he named Lucifers, which produced phenomenal sales. The widespread availability of the matches actually led to a significant increase in smoking.

The use of white phosphorous in matches is now illegal.
